Humanities Flaws
Stress and FearThis whole movie is a demonstration of how humanity handles under stressful situations and if they can fight the fear of being taken. When the movie starts off many people handle this stressful situation in many different ways. We have some people handle it by doing things they know such as fixing the generator, or even just completely ignoring the idea that there is even anything going on, basically denial. We see other people handle it in much more drastic measures such as overdosing on pills or hanging themselves. These are the people who literally can not handle the stress and the constant fear that they will be attacked and killed painfully so they end it themselves, giving them a sense of control when the situation they are in seemingly can't be controlled. Eventually people start to pick sides, "THrow people in the dark, you scare them, nno more rules , then you'll see how primitive they get." Humans are just like any other animal, you back them into a corner, take away their technology and they will be consumed by fear which will lead to lashing out.

Humanity and RulesThere was one major scene that seemed to separate itself from the rest of the movie to specifically talk about how the people in the store are starting to lose their humanity. I specifically love the quote by Ollie "Put more than two of us in a room and we'll start dreaming of ways to kill each other- why do you think we made politics and religion?". This quote was funny to me but the meaning behind this is that humans naturally find reasons to hate or blame other people for their suffering. Mrs. Carmody was a crazy women driven crazy by religion and thinking that she is a vessel for God and that everyone should listen to her and accept her faith to survive. This is when she turns on the people who she doesn't like and tries to use them as sacrifices, and everyone else follows her. Well until she is shot to death and then everyone backs down.

Role of the Military/ ReligionThis movie doesn't touch too much on the role of the military while attacking the idea of religious extremists. One of the things that many people take for granted is the protect that we get from our military and our police, and when that is taken away and people are left to fend for themselves against creatures that are from a different world what to they fall back on? In this movie the only thing they can fall back to is religion. Mrs. Carmody is the representation of an extremist. She has decided that the mist was a punishment from God and that with faith they can all be saved. She starts to believe that she has divine protection which leads to others starting to follow her. "They'll turn to whoever promises a solution," which she did. Although we find out later that her divine protection didn't protect her from bullets. After she dies the people who were following her finally snap out of this daze. Eventually its not even religion that saved them, but the military that everyone had thought abandoned them
