Oppressed Love
1950s SettingCarol Was a movie that was made in 2015 but the story takes place in the 1950's. The setting of this movie covers a lot of visual aspects of the 1950. For example all of Therese's photos were in black and white. In addition all scenes of Therese making the photos were in a dark room, it showed us the old process of how photography was done. Another aspect of the 50's was how people dressed and what cars they drove. Carol demonstrated the wealthy class of the 50's by wearing a heavy fur coat while Therese would normally wear a skirt and the same hat in several different scenes. In addition all men were wearing nice suits or some plaid and a top hat that matched the suit color. Another visual aspect of the 50's was the cars that they drove, The style of car is kinda evident since a lot of the time Carol and Therese were in Carol's 1949 Packard Super Deluxe 8, which really shows how wealthy Carol is and really puts you in the 1950s.

LesbianismLesbianism is the major conflict of this film. Carol, an older women going through a rough divorce, seduces a young photographer Therese who is dating a male but is uncertain about her sexuality. Surprisingly Therese goes through the struggle of being heterosexual and found a guy that really liked her and wanted to be with her, however she still felt uncertain about it. Until she met Carol who was married but still had a history of liking women. As the story progresses we see the development of the relationship between Carol and Therese until we reach the climax of the film where Carol finally engages in sexual activities with Therese which then leads to a loss in Carol's court case. In which Carol then decided to leave Therese to solve her own problems first which throws Therese into turmoil. However Therese is able to pull herself out and keep moving in life. Until Carol ends up returning to Therese to confess how she truly does love her. This love between them seemingly was just a fling but turned into a true love, which was extremely hard to achieve between two women in the 1950s

Lack of CensorshipCarol was made in 2015 but takes place in the 1950's. Children's Hour was released in 1961 and takes place in the 50's and 60's. Both movies tell the story of how society treats lesbians but the censorship that was in Children's Hour was not in Carol. In Children's Hour they were not able to directly talk about lesbianism or show it. However Carol has the freedom to do whatever it wants. When Therese was having her internal struggle of whether or not she liked women she and her boyfriend actually discuss and talk about what it would be like to be homosexual and if they have ever been. Another freedom that Carol had was how they actually showed how intimate Carol and Therese got. There was a sex scene where we actually see the event rather than have the scene fade and leave the audience to assume what happened.
