Something in the NightSomething in Night sings about the pains of settling down. How people go and fight there way through the world to find something or someone that they love. The underlying pain in the song talks about how no matter what you do to get the things you love, no matter what pains you go through, someone will come to take it away. When you have something great there will always be someone who thinks you don't deserve it or think that they deserve it instead. The Promised land leads us into the start of Bruce's rebellion and willingness to fight for his promised land.

The Promised LandThe Promised Land is an upbeat song that focuses on difficulties of the teenage years. The line "Mister, I ain't a boy, no, I'm a man," describes how even though Bruce is living in the moment and is considerably confident in his faith. He sings about driving into the storm, facing the fears and pains that try to crush your dreams. Even through the pain on the journey there is a promised land for those who stay planted strong with their dreams, who fight for their individuality.

FactoryFactory is short song by Bruce but it has an even clearer meaning then a lot of songs. Factory talks about the working life and how many people are forced to conform to a simple style of living; waking up and going through the motions until the work day ends and they can go back to sleep. The pain in Bruce's voice helps to bring out pain that his father had to go through. Working all day and losing his hearing just to make a living, just to be like everyone else.

Streets of Fire / Darkness on the Edge of Towen
Streets of Fire gave me the perception of giving up on trying to be an individual. How you fight and fight and fight to be your own person, someone different. How its just EASIER to just give up and give in to the "strangers" who trick him into thinking that life can be comforting if you just ignore the streets of fire, ignore the pain and conflict that follows stepping out of line and standing out.

Darkness on the Edge of Town gives us a summary of the entire album (hence the title of the album). It contrasts to the ideals in Born to Run in the aspect that its about being settled down and being broken. Lacking the drive to take your love and run away to somewhere better, this song is much more depressing and broken. Bruce sings about divorce and the secrets that everyone has. How they carry those secrets and those pains with them every day. The main character in the song seems to be living in the past and his secrets. In relation to The Promised Land Bruce sings about pains that life brings and fighting through those pains. In 'Edge of Town' he sings about the same storm or darkness that lingers over people who have trouble in life. The most noticeable difference is the concept of being settled down in one place, reliving the memories of the past and not having the money or the "blood that burned in their veins." The main character had found his love and they had ended up getting a divorce. Instead of moving on and trying to find someone new the character seems to settle down in a town that has become darker and more painful since the split.
