Key Points/ Place as a ChannelIn these two album's, Greetings From Asbury Park and The Wild, The Innocent And The E Street Shuffle, I found Bruces usages of place to distinguish how important it is the place we grow up in or the harships we go through while growing up make a major impact. there is nothing more familar than home. So throughout the two albums there were several different settings, wiether it be a carnival or a slum, from the wealthy neighborhood girls running away with the greasers to the gipsy tents to dance and enjoy life. Different place create different autmospheres and experiences. Moving somewhere new can mean a fresh start or a clean slate to some, while others feel they are stuck in the endless loop of the area they live in. Place makes a difference.
Specifically "Lost in The Flood", "Its Hard to be A Saint in this City", or "4th of July, Asbury Park" give me the best idea of how Bruce wanted to get a point accross about how places effect us rather than we effect the places. "Lost in the Flood" told the story of someone returning to thier home and realizing how flooded the town has become. When the main character is asked if they have been "Lost in The Flood" it really asks if he/she has been overwelmed by the crime or more specifically the drugs that are polluting and destroying the town they used to love. "Its Hard to be A Saint in this City" then gives a similar story only we see the main protagonist struggle to stay good and idealistic when living in a town that is corrupt and crime infested. When surrounded by the bad influences how long can some people hold out against it without giving in? The last song that made the biggest impact on me was "4th of July, Asbury Park" because it gave the listener an new perspective. In this song the main character had been able to pull himself out of the destructive looped crime community to be with a girl who was from outside of it. How he used this girl to draw himself out of it and to stay a saint even when tempted to.
